How Digital Clubs Initiative Will Shape Tanzania's Tech Future




In a decisive move to nurture a digitally proficient generation, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) is spearheading the creation of digital clubs in educational institutions across the country. TCRA Director General, Dr. Jabiri Bakari, announced in an interview on Sunday that the initiative is a collaborative effort with various education and ICT stakeholders aimed at establishing digital clubs at all educational levels.

Dr. Bakari highlighted that the campaign to establish digital clubs starts from nursery and extends through primary, secondary, college, and university levels. This is part of TCRA's strategy to foster the growth of ICTs, facilitating the use of digital systems and applications in various sectors of life.

"The estblishment of digital clubs is foundational for fostering homegrown creativity and innovations to address local challenges," said Dr. Bakari. The campaign currently spans TCRA’s offices in Zanzibar, Southern Highlands, Central Zone, Northern Zone, Eastern Zone, and Lake Zone.

During recent appearances on Geita's Storm FM and Blessed Hope Radio, TCRA’s Lake Zone Manager, Engineer Imelda Salum, emphasized the crucial role these clubs play. She explained that digital clubs are pivotal in equipping Tanzanian youth with the skills needed to succeed in a digital economy.

"Digital clubs are more than just extracurricular activities," Eng. Salum explained. "They are innovative platforms within educational institutions, from kindergartens to universities, that equip students with the digital skills they need to thrive in the digital economy."

She urged all education stakeholders to support the initiative, highlighting its benefits in building a knowledgeable and skilled community capable of contributing to national digital objectives. 

"These clubs are instrumental in fostering a community that is knowledgeable, skilled, and equipped to contribute to our national objectives, which are centered on crafting a digital Tanzania," Eng. Salum stated.

The digital clubs initiative also promotes deep engagement with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, enhancing students' critical thinking, creativity, and innovation skills. Eng. Salum stressed that the clubs are inclusive, welcoming all students regardless of their initial interest in STEM, thereby making every student a potential participant.


"Active participation in these clubs not only keeps students abreast of technological trends but also opens doors to career opportunities through expert coaching and mentoring," she added.


By fostering digital literacy and creating platforms for technological innovation, the TCRA's digital clubs initiative is set to significantly impact Tanzania's tech landscape, preparing the youth to meet future digital challenges and opportunities.
