In recent years, BRELAND has embarked on a remarkable journey that has both shaped his career and personal growth. After the release of his 2022 debut album, “Cross Country,” which offered a fresh and innovative take on country music, BRELAND quickly became a rising star in the genre. His relentless touring, numerous awards, and collaborations with some of country music's biggest names marked this transformative period.
However, amid his success, BRELAND felt the need to pause, reflect, and reassess his direction. Seeking inspiration and connection to his roots, he embarked on a personal journey to Selma, Alabama, a place deeply connected to his family's history. Both his great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother once called Selma home, and the trip was partly inspired by his mother, who had visited the town the year prior.
BRELAND describes Selma as a town with dual significance: "Selma is often viewed as a vibrant symbol of hope, freedom, and the resilience of the American and African American communities. Yet, it is also a town that many have largely overlooked.” He noted the lasting impact of a tornado that struck the area last year, with many 1960s-era storefronts still abandoned. “It is essentially a food desert. The closest hospital is 30 miles away. My visit revealed a community that was not what I had anticipated, prompting me to realize that I could have easily grown up in such an environment. Historically, these are my people”
This powerful experience culminated in the creation of BRELAND's new EP, “Project 2024.” The project reflects his journey of introspection, acknowledging both the struggles of the past and the resilience of communities like Selma. Through this new music, BRELAND continues to push boundaries and explore his evolving identity as an artist.
