Beauty Queen Chidimma Adetshina to Be Stripped of South African Identity Amid Nationality Dispute

Chidimma Adetshina, the beauty queen entangled in a heated nationality debate, is set to lose her South African identity and travel documents, as announced by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs on Tuesday. The investigation into her eligibility began after she became a finalist in the Miss South Africa pageant, sparking public scrutiny over her South African nationality due to her Nigerian and Mozambican parentage.

In August, Ms. Adetshina, a law student, withdrew from the Miss South Africa contest when Home Affairs revealed her mother might have obtained her South African citizenship through "identity theft." Following her withdrawal, Adetshina was invited to compete in Miss Universe Nigeria, a title she later won.

Department of Home Affairs Director-General Tommy Makhode told a parliamentary committee that both Adetshina and her mother missed a deadline to defend their eligibility, leading to the decision to revoke their documents. The case has since been referred to the Hawks, a special police unit specializing in serious crimes, who concluded it as a "case of fraud." Prosecutors are now reviewing the findings.

Despite the controversy, Ms. Adetshina, who asserts she was born in Soweto, expressed her pride in both her South African and Nigerian heritage. She is now representing Nigeria at the Miss Universe competition in Mexico on November 16, competing alongside Mia le Roux, this year’s Miss South Africa.

BRELAND’s Journey of Reflection Inspires New EP “Project 2024"

In recent years, BRELAND has embarked on a remarkable journey that has both shaped his career and personal growth. After the release of his 2022 debut album, “Cross Country,” which offered a fresh and innovative take on country music, BRELAND quickly became a rising star in the genre. His relentless touring, numerous awards, and collaborations with some of country music's biggest names marked this transformative period.

However, amid his success, BRELAND felt the need to pause, reflect, and reassess his direction. Seeking inspiration and connection to his roots, he embarked on a personal journey to Selma, Alabama, a place deeply connected to his family's history. Both his great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother once called Selma home, and the trip was partly inspired by his mother, who had visited the town the year prior.

BRELAND describes Selma as a town with dual significance: "Selma is often viewed as a vibrant symbol of hope, freedom, and the resilience of the American and African American communities. Yet, it is also a town that many have largely overlooked.” He noted the lasting impact of a tornado that struck the area last year, with many 1960s-era storefronts still abandoned. “It is essentially a food desert. The closest hospital is 30 miles away. My visit revealed a community that was not what I had anticipated, prompting me to realize that I could have easily grown up in such an environment. Historically, these are my people”

This powerful experience culminated in the creation of BRELAND's new EP, “Project 2024.” The project reflects his journey of introspection, acknowledging both the struggles of the past and the resilience of communities like Selma. Through this new music, BRELAND continues to push boundaries and explore his evolving identity as an artist.

Tanzania Welcomes Energy Investors to Boost Production and Distribution, Says Deputy Prime Minister

Tanzania's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, has extended an invitation to investors in the energy sector to help accelerate the production, distribution, and connection of energy in the country.

Speaking today in Singapore during a panel discussion on energy, which included Cambodia's Minister for Mines and Energy, Mr. Keo Rottanak, and New Zealand's Minister for Natural Resources, Mr. Shane Jones, Dr. Biteko emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing Tanzania's energy sector.

"Governments cannot do everything on their own, which is why it is crucial to collaborate with the private sector. In Tanzania, we invite private investors to contribute to energy production, availability, and distribution in order to improve the quality of life for the people," Dr. Biteko remarked during the opening of Singapore's International Energy Week.

Dr. Biteko also highlighted Tanzania's efforts to promote clean cooking energy, following research revealing that a significant portion of the population relies on firewood and charcoal for cooking. This reliance, he said, is contributing to respiratory illnesses and environmental degradation.

To address these challenges, the government has developed a strategy aimed at ensuring that 80% of Tanzanians will use clean cooking energy by 2034, Dr. Biteko added.

The remarks underscore Tanzania's commitment to energy sector reform and its vision for sustainable development.

Kenya’s President Nominates Kithure Kindiki as New Deputy President After Gachagua's Removal

In a swift move following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, President William Ruto has nominated Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki as his new deputy president. Kindiki, a close ally of Ruto, had been a top contender for the running mate position during the 2022 elections.

The nomination, however, still awaits parliamentary approval. This decision follows Gachagua’s impeachment by the Kenyan Senate on Thursday, where senators voted on five out of eleven charges against him, including gross violation of the constitution.

Gachagua, who did not attend the proceedings, had requested a postponement due to being hospitalized with chest pains, but the senators declined the request. His absence and the refusal to delay the proceedings signaled the Senate's determination to remove him, especially after his falling out with President Ruto.

Gachagua has denied the charges, calling them politically motivated. His impeachment marks a significant shift in Kenya’s political landscape, and all eyes are now on Parliament to finalize the appointment of Kindiki as the new deputy president.

Hong Kong Cuts Liquor Tax to Revitalize Nightlife and Boost Economy

In an effort to revive its status as a premier travel destination with a vibrant nightlife and dining scene, Hong Kong's Chief Executive, John Lee, announced a significant reduction in liquor tax on Wednesday. The move comes as part of a broader strategy to enhance the city’s economic competitiveness amid challenges from regional rivals like Singapore, Japan, and mainland Chinese cities.

Lee revealed in his annual policy address that the duty rate for spirits with an import price exceeding 200 Hong Kong dollars (approximately $26) would be slashed from 100% to 10% for the portion above that price. The tax cut, effective immediately, is intended to support the logistics, storage, tourism, and high-end dining industries in the city.

Hong Kong's economy has faced growing pressure due to shifts in residents' lifestyles and the departure of many middle-class citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic. These changes, coupled with an increasing preference among residents to spend weekends in mainland China—where lower prices and more varied entertainment options are available—have contributed to declining local demand. Additionally, spending by mainland Chinese visitors has dropped significantly.

Vacancies are now a common sight in the city's once-thriving shopping districts, and the city’s bar revenue fell by about 28% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2019, according to preliminary official data.

With this tax reduction, Lee hopes to reinvigorate Hong Kong’s economy, particularly its nightlife and hospitality sectors, and attract both locals and international visitors back to the city’s high-end dining and entertainment establishments

Women Entrepreneurs in Africa Overcome Financial Barriers with Support from EWAT Program

Augustina Tufuor, a 30-year-old entrepreneur from Ghana, founded Tropical Snacks, a business that produces all-natural plantain chips. Despite her entrepreneurial success, Tufuor faced significant challenges in expanding her business due to financial barriers. Traditional banks required her to deposit 20,000 Cedis as collateral and hire a professional evaluator before even considering her loan request. On top of this, she was confronted with an interest rate exceeding 36%, making business growth nearly impossible.

Tufuor's story reflects the broader struggle of many women entrepreneurs in sub-Saharan Africa, where access to finance, land, and technology remains a major obstacle. According to the International Trade Centre (ITC), over 70% of women-led businesses in Africa lack access to formal financial services, forcing many to rely on informal networks or personal savings to fund their ventures.

In response to these challenges, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the ITC launched the Empowering Women and Boosting Livelihoods through Agricultural Trade (EWAT) program. Operating across six countries, EWAT is designed to help women entrepreneurs tap into the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by offering training in product development, sales, marketing, and financial readiness.

One of the program’s success stories is Asma Begum Mirza, a 61-year-old agripreneur from Nigeria, who, like Tufuor, struggled to secure loans due to high interest rates and collateral demands. After attending EWAT’s Financial Readiness Bootcamp in Lagos, she gained valuable skills in crafting business plans and pitching to potential investors.

The program not only equips women with knowledge but also collaborates with financial institutions to develop loan products specifically designed for women in agribusiness. Clara Park, FAO's Senior Gender Officer, emphasized the centrality of gender equality in FAO’s mission, highlighting the organization's efforts to help women access new markets, navigate trade regulations, and improve their financial prospects.

Thanks to initiatives like EWAT, women entrepreneurs such as Augustina Tufuor and Asma Begum Mirza are overcoming structural barriers and gaining the tools necessary to grow their businesses in Africa's agriculture sector.

South Africa Mourns the Death of Tito Mboweni, Former Minister for Labour and Finance

Tito Mboweni, South Africa's first Minister for Labour after the end of apartheid, has passed away at the age of 65. Local media reported on Saturday night, October 12, that Mboweni died in a Johannesburg hospital surrounded by family, following a short illness.

Mboweni, a prominent anti-apartheid activist, was appointed as the first Minister for Labour in democratic South Africa, serving from 1994 to 1999 under the leadership of the nation's Founding President, Nelson Mandela. His tenure was marked by efforts to reshape the country’s labour laws, promoting equality and workers’ rights in post-apartheid South Africa.

In addition to his role in labour reform, Mboweni was appointed Governor of the South African Reserve Bank in 1999, where he served for a decade. His contributions to economic policy during this period earned him widespread recognition as a key figure in stabilizing South Africa's economy.

Mboweni later became Minister of Finance during the first term of current President Cyril Ramaphosa. On October 11, the Presidency released a statement in which Ramaphosa praised Mboweni as "a leader and compatriot who served our nation as an activist, economic policy innovator, and champion of labour rights." Libya’s Eastern Parliament Appoints Naji Mohamed Issa Belqasem as New Central Bank Governor

Libya’s eastern parliament has appointed Naji Mohamed Issa Belqasem as the new governor of the Central Bank of Libya following the dismissal of former governor Sadiq al-Kabir by the presidential council last month. The decision, announced on Monday, saw all 108 lawmakers vote in favor of Belqasem, who previously served as the central bank’s director of banking and monetary control.

In addition to Belqasem’s appointment, Mari Muftah Rahil Barrasi was named as deputy governor. The two are tasked with forming a new board of directors for the central bank within the next 10 days.

The appointments are part of a broader U.N.-facilitated agreement between Libya’s eastern parliament and the High Council of State to establish new leadership for the country’s central bank. The decision follows controversy over the presidential council’s move last month to replace al-Kabir with Mohamed Abdul Salam al-Shukri, which was rejected by eastern authorities. They argued that the removal of al-Kabir was illegitimate and did not follow interim regulations established during U.N.-backed talks.

Al-Kabir, who had served as governor since October 2011 following the NATO-backed overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi, had faced criticism from officials on both sides of Libya’s political divide, particularly concerning the allocation of the country’s oil revenues.

FIFAfrica 2024 Highlights Internet Access and Digital Rights in Africa

The 2024 Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa (FIFAfrica) took place from September 25-27, marking its first-ever edition in Francophone Africa. The event focused on digital democracy, online freedom of expression, and expanding internet access, especially for marginalized groups.

Despite rising internet usage, many African countries face barriers such as high costs and limited infrastructure. Cheikh Fall, president of AfricTivistes, stressed the urgency of addressing these gaps: "Africa missed out on past technological revolutions; it can't afford to miss the internet revolution."

The forum called for greater collaboration between governments and the private sector to improve accessibility and reduce internet costs. Cyriac Gbogou, AfricTivistes' vice president, urged governments to recognize the economic potential of the digital economy and work with providers to make the internet more affordable.

Participants also highlighted the need for policies to enhance internet freedom and curb restrictive regulations, which often lead to censorship and shutdowns, threatening Africa’s digital growth.

Zanzibar President Defends Mandatory Tourist Insurance Amid Criticism

President Hussein Mwinyi of Zanzibar has robustly defended the implementation of mandatory insurance coverage for tourists entering the archipelago, citing the substantial costs borne by his government when visitors face health issues or accidents during their stay.

Effective October 1, 2024, all foreign visitors will be required to obtain inbound travel insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, covering up to 92 days of their stay in the islands. The insurance, priced at $44 for non-residents, is an additional requirement alongside their Tanzania e-Visa.

This policy has faced backlash from tour operators and opposition politicians, who argue that it imposes an unnecessary financial burden on tourists, many of whom already possess travel insurance.

During a meeting at the Zanzibar State House on September 26, 2024, with Italy’s newly appointed ambassador to Tanzania, Dr. Mwinyi emphasized that the new insurance policy aims to protect both tourists and the government.

"The introduction of travel insurance for tourists is designed to strengthen the tourism sector and foster a safer, more welcoming environment for visitors, while alleviating the financial pressures on the government," said Dr. Mwinyi. He elaborated that the government has been absorbing significant costs for tourists who fall ill, encounter accidents, or even pass away during their visits.

"The introduction of this insurance will ease that burden," Dr. Mwinyi affirmed, highlighting the necessity of the policy in supporting the sustainability of Zanzibar’s tourism sector.

As the government moves forward with this initiative, the focus remains on balancing visitor safety with economic considerations, aiming to ensure that both tourists and the local economy benefit from a robust insurance framework.

Acting Director of Youth Development, Eliakim Mtawa, revealed that the Prime Minister's Office, in collaboration with UNFPA, had organized a special program for young people, where they received training in entrepreneurship, project initiation and management, life skills, and management of income-generating groups.

One of the beneficiaries, Clement Cosmas, representing the youth groups, expressed gratitude to the Sixth Phase Government for providing the equipment, which he said would help them achieve economic independence.
