Libreville, Gabon. Gabon has resolved its payment dispute with the World Bank, according to the country's authorities. Technical issues had prevented Gabon from meeting its commitments by the June 30 deadline.
In an undated statement, Gabon's Ministry of Public Accounts confirmed that arrears had been paid back to the World Bank. This development follows the leak of a confidential World Bank note, which went viral. The note, dated July 1, announced the suspension of Gabon's right to make loan and grant withdrawals due to a failure to meet obligations, with the payments amounting to approximately $17 million.
The ministry attributed the payment issues to debt inherited from the previous administration led by Ali Bongo. Gabon's ruling junta, which took power from the Bongo administration last year, has reiterated its commitment to settling all outstanding debts.
The resolution of this dispute marks a significant step for the transitional government in maintaining financial stability and continuing its cooperation with international financial institutions.
