Gasabo, Rwanda. Rwandan President Paul Kagame was greeted by throngs of admiring supporters at a rally in Gasabo, located approximately twelve kilometers from Kigali city center, as he campaigned for a fourth term in office. Kagame, driven atop an open van, waved to thousands of enthusiastic backers before leading the crowd in chanting slogans of his party, the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF).
In his address, Kagame expressed gratitude to his supporters, saying, "I have come to say thank you in advance. May you keep focus on the important things and do not be distracted by the detractors."
Rwandans are set to vote on Monday in an election that is expected to extend Kagame's nearly three-decade-long rule. Campaign rallies will close on Saturday, and the vote is anticipated to give Kagame another five-year term. According to electoral authorities, a total of 9.5 million Rwandans are registered to vote.
Kagame's challengers, Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana, have struggled to attract significant crowds to their events. Both candidates also contested against Kagame in 2017, where he secured nearly 99% of the vote. Observers predict a similar outcome this year, as serious opposition to Kagame has long been absent.
