Port Sudan, Sudan. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met with Sudan’s armed forces chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to seek an end to the ongoing conflict between Sudan's military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Since April 2023, Sudan has been in turmoil with clashes between al-Burhan's forces and the RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti. The conflict has displaced millions and created a severe humanitarian crisis.
Ahmed's visit to Port Sudan is the highest-level state visit since the conflict began. The Sudan Sovereign Council highlighted the strong relations between Ethiopia and Sudan. Ahmed’s press secretary stated the visit aimed to "achieve peace and security" in Sudan, although specific proposals were not disclosed.
During their meeting, al-Burhan accused the RSF of committing “crimes and atrocities” against the state. Both sides have faced accusations of war crimes from UN officials and international rights groups.
Ahmed's engagement is seen as a critical step toward stabilizing the region and addressing the humanitarian crisis.
