LIBERIA'S PRESIDENT JOSEPH BOAKAI SLASHES SALARY BY 40% IN MOVE TOWARDS RESPONSIBLE GOVERNANCE.

Monrovia, Liberia.

President Joseph Boakai announced a 40% cut in his salary to $8,000 from $13,400 in a move aimed at promoting responsible governance and solidarity with struggling Liberians. This decision comes amid growing public scrutiny over government salaries and rising living costs.

Boakai, who took office in January, hopes his action sets a precedent for other officials. Anderson D. Miamen from the Centre of Transparency and Accountability in Liberia welcomed the cut, emphasizing the need for transparency in how the savings will be used. Similarly, W. Lawrence Yealue II, an advocate for government transparency, praised the move, calling it a commendable example of leadership.

In addition to the salary reduction, Boakai has pledged to empower the Civil Service Agency for fair public servant compensation. He has also declared his assets and ordered an audit of the presidential office. These steps are part of his broader strategy to address corruption and financial mismanagement, issues that plagued the previous administration.

While some citizens appreciate the gesture, others question its impact, noting the president's continued benefits. The presidential office's budget remains nearly $3 million this year. Despite mixed reactions, Boakai’s salary cut is seen as a symbolic step towards rebuilding public trust and fostering responsible governance in Liberia.
