The Tanzania Sugar Board has denied allegations of delaying the issuance of sugar import permits to manufacturers. The Board’s Director, Professor Kenneth Bengesi, stated that the manufacturers themselves were late in collecting the permits.
Speaking to journalists, Professor Bengesi explained that manufacturers received their permits in early January, while traders received theirs at the end of January and in April. He emphasized that it is misleading to claim that traders were given permits before manufacturers.
Professor Bengesi also clarified that some manufacturers failed to import sugar for the 2022/2023 season, leading to a price increase to TZS 4,000 per kilogram in June 2023. Only the Kilombero company imported 2,380 tons of sugar out of the four companies that had permits.
Despite these challenges, the government has continued to issue permits to manufacturers for the 2023/2024 season to ensure sufficient sugar availability in Tanzania.
