The French league's legal commission has ruled that Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) must pay Kylian Mbappé €55 million ($61 million) in unpaid wages, following the striker's claim for three months’ salary and a portion of a loyalty bonus. The decision comes after Mbappé, who recently joined Real Madrid on a free transfer, rejected a mediation offer in the dispute with his former club.
PSG disputes the ruling, stating that under an agreement made when Mbappé was sidelined ahead of the 2023-24 season, he had waived certain payments. The club plans to contest the decision in another legal forum, arguing that Mbappé had publicly and privately agreed to relinquish bonuses tied to his reintegration into the team.
The conflict adds to the strained relationship between PSG and Mbappé, which worsened during his final season. After PSG offered him their most lucrative contract ever in 2022, tensions rose when the club failed to deliver on promises to sign key players. Mbappé also took issue with his contract extension, which included an option for an additional year that he later declined, leaving PSG at risk of losing him without compensation.
The situation escalated in the summer of 2023 when Mbappé was excluded from a preseason tour and PSG sought to sell him to avoid losing him for free. He refused a €300 million offer from Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal, eventually returning to the PSG lineup after talks between the parties. However, the saga concluded with his move to Real Madrid, leaving unresolved financial disputes between the player and his former club.
