South African singer and songwriter Tyla Laura Seethal, popularly known as Tyla, has won the 2024 MTV Video Music Award (VMA) for Best Afrobeat with her hit song Water.
While accepting the award at the ceremony held in the United States, Tyla expressed her gratitude, emphasizing that it was a great moment for African music.
She highlighted the global influence of her song Water, noting that it serves as proof that African music can also be considered mainstream pop.
Speaking further about African music, the singer said, “This is very special, but it’s also bittersweet because I know there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeat.”
Tyla, representing her South African roots, concluded her speech by applauding other Afrobeats artists nominated in the same category, saying, "I love you all."
