The Ngorongoro Crater has been added to the Second 100 International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) Geological Heritage Sites. This designation was announced at the 37th International Geological Congress by IUGS President John Ludden and Secretary-General Stanley Finney.
The recognition highlights Ngorongoro as the world’s largest intact caldera, noted for its unique geological features. The Crater's inclusion follows a detailed publication by Cultural Heritage Officer Lightness Kyambile and Senior Geologist Ramadhani Khatibu, who emphasized its significance for volcanology, seismic activity, and paleoanthropological studies.
The Crater, part of the Ngorongoro Volcanic Highlands in Tanzania, is known for its rich wildlife and ecological diversity. This new recognition builds on its 1979 UNESCO World Heritage Site designation and underscores its global scientific and educational value.
