Chidimma Adetshina, 23, has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria following a contentious attempt to compete in Miss South Africa last month. Born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and a South African mother, Adetshina withdrew from the Miss South Africa competition after facing opposition from some South Africans, including a government minister, due to her Nigerian roots.
"I just want everyone to know that this crown is not just a crown of beauty, it is going to unite us as one. I am really proud and grateful that I am going to represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe, and I know we are going to win," Adetshina expressed to the audience, emphasizing the unifying power of her win.
The controversy surrounding Adetshina's participation in Miss South Africa highlighted the ongoing xenophobia faced by Nigerians in South Africa, which has at times escalated into violence and attacks on Nigerian businesses.
Now, as Miss Universe Nigeria, Adetshina will represent her country at the global Miss Universe pageant in Mexico this November, carrying with her a message of unity and resilience.
