Indian Rapper Hanumankind Rises to Global Fame with Unique Style

In a ort span, Indian rapper Hanumankind, born Sooraj Cherukat, has rapidly emerged as a standout in the country's growing hip-hop scene. His track "Big Dawgs" not only topped global charts but also briefly outpaced Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, "Not Like Us."

The music video for "Big Dawgs," featuring Cherukat in a "well of death" alongside stunt drivers, has garnered over 132 million streams on Spotify and 83 million views on YouTube since its release in July, propelling him to international fame.

Born in Kerala and having spent his formative years in Houston, Texas, Cherukat’s music blends his global experiences with the gritty realities of southern Indian street life. His style, influenced by Houston’s hip-hop legends, also incorporates elements of Indian culture, like tabla beats and local rhythms.

However, his unique approach has drawn criticism. Some argue that his English lyrics and Western influences make his music less relatable to Indian audiences. Despite this, Cherukat's fans appreciate his universal appeal and refusal to conform to traditional expectations of an Indian rapper.

Cherukat's rise reflects his struggle with identity and belonging, as he navigates between his Indian roots and global influences. As he continues to defy expectations, his work resonates with a diverse audience that values his integrity and authenticity.

Johann Rupert Becomes Africa’s Wealthiest Person, Overtaking Aliko Dangote

South African luxury goods magnate Johann Rupert has ascended to the position of Africa's richest person, surpassing Nigeria's Aliko Dangote, who had long held the top spot. Rupert, 74, controls the world's largest luxury watchmaker, Cie Financiere Richemont, through a family trust. The Switzerland-based company owns prestigious brands such as Jaeger-LeCoultre and Cartier.

His fortune is largely tied to his 86% stake in Dangote Cement, along with investments in Dangote Sugar, Nascon Allied Industries, United Bank for Africa, and other ventures, including the massive Dangote Refinery in Lagos.

In the latest rankings, South African billionaire Nicky Oppenheimer ranks third with a net worth of $11.3 billion, followed by Egyptian businessman Nassef Sawiris with $9.37 billion, and South African investor Natie Kirsh in fifth place with $9.14 billion.

This shift in wealth dynamics highlights the volatility of the economic landscape in Africa and the growing influence of South Africa's luxury goods sector on the continent's wealth distribution.

Government Launches Tree Planting Campaign to Preserve Kilimanjaro's Disappearing Snow

In response to the rapidly disappearing snow on Mount Kilimanjaro, the Tanzanian government, in collaboration with various stakeholders, has launched a special campaign to plant over one billion trees across northern regions. Additionally, around eight million trees will be planted specifically in the Kilimanjaro region as part of a short-term strategy to combat the effects of climate change on the mountain's snow cover.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dunstan Kitandula, announced the initiative while addressing Parliament in Dodoma. He was responding to a query from Moshi Rural MP, Professor Patrick Ndakidemi, regarding the government's immediate plans to address the snow loss on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Deputy Minister Kitandula explained that the reduction in snow is primarily due to global warming, driven by human activities such as deforestation, agriculture, and burning in the surrounding areas. Other contributing factors include reduced rainfall, periods of drought, and dry winds from the Indian Ocean.

In addition to the tree planting efforts, the government is also focused on raising public awareness about the importance of tree planting and environmental conservation. This will be done through radio and television programs, festivals, and various commemorations. The government is also working with regional and international organizations to mitigate and adapt to climate change, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and restoring the ecology around Mount Kilimanjaro.

Mariah Carey Mourns the Loss of Her Mother and Sister on the Same Day

Grammy-winning singer Mariah Carey revealed in a heartfelt statement on Monday that she suffered the tragic loss of both her mother, Patricia Carey, and her sister, Alison Carey, on the same day over the past weekend.

"My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day," Carey expressed. Patricia Carey, a Juilliard-trained opera singer, was a significant influence on Mariah's musical journey. Botswana Unveils Second-Largest Diamond Ever Discovered

In a historic find, a massive 2,492-carat diamond has been unearthed at the Karowe Mine in Botswana, marking the largest diamond discovery in more than a century. The as-yet-unnamed diamond is the second-largest ever found, trailing only the famous Cullinan Diamond discovered in South Africa in 1905.

Botswana's President Mokgweetsi Masisi revealed the fist-sized gem at a viewing ceremony on Thursday, expressing his amazement as he held the half-kilogram stone. "It is overwhelming," Masisi said, calling it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The diamond, which was recovered by the Canadian mining company Lucara Diamond Corp., is being hailed as an exceptional and high-quality stone. Located using advanced X-ray technology, the diamond was found intact, a rarity for such large gems.

Lucara's President and CEO, William Lamb, shared the company's excitement over the discovery, stating, "We are ecstatic about the recovery of this extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond." This find is the latest in a series of significant discoveries at the Karowe Mine, which has produced four diamonds over 1,000 carats in the past decade.

Botswana, the world's second-largest producer of natural diamonds, has consistently unearthed some of the globe's largest stones. The country’s previous notable discoveries include the 1,758-carat Sewelo diamond and the 1,111-carat Lesedi La Rona diamond, both also from the Karowe Mine.

As officials marvel at the new discovery, it remains too early to determine the diamond's value or how it will be sold. However, given the track record of past discoveries, expectations are high for this historic gem.

The minister outlined the key objectives of these exploration efforts: to increase Uganda's petroleum reserves, extend production beyond 25 years, and bolster midstream projects like the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). The EACOP project, led by TotalEnergies, involves drilling 419 wells in western Uganda and constructing a 1,443-kilometer heated pipeline to transport oil from Lake Albert to the Tanzanian coast.

As Uganda nears the production phase, the government is counting on the oil and gas sector to significantly contribute to the country’s economic development.

Mia le Roux Becomes First Deaf Woman Crowned Miss South Africa

Mia le Roux made history by becoming the first deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa, a momentous achievement that she hopes will inspire others who feel marginalized to pursue their "wildest dreams."

In her acceptance speech, Le Roux expressed her gratitude and determination to use her platform to advocate for inclusivity and representation. "I never thought someone like me could become Miss South Africa," she remarked, underscoring the significance of her victory for those who have felt excluded from society.

Le Roux's win comes in the wake of controversy involving 23-year-old law student Chidimma Adetshina, who withdrew from the competition just a week before the finals. Adetshina's withdrawal followed allegations that her mother had stolen the identity of a South African woman. Born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother, Adetshina had been embroiled in a social media controversy, with many, including a cabinet minister, questioning her eligibility to represent the country.

In an interview with the BBC's Esther Kahumbi, Le Roux reflected on her win and the turmoil surrounding Adetshina's withdrawal, highlighting the complexities and challenges that accompanied this year's competition.

Kylian Mbappé Demands €55 Million from Former Club PSG

French football star Kylian Mbappé is reportedly demanding €55 million from his former club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), for unpaid wages and bonuses. The claim includes a bonus promised when he joined the club in 2017, his last three months' wages, and an additional "ethical bonus," according to French media outlet Le Monde.

The 2018 World Cup champion referred the matter to the legal committee of the Clubs' Association in early August. By mid-August, Mbappé escalated the issue to UEFA through the French Football Federation.

PSG, owned by Qatari interests, received a formal notice but maintains that the amount in question was not paid because both parties had reached an agreement. According to PSG, Mbappé had agreed to forgo the money if he left the club on a free transfer.

This dispute has been ongoing for nearly a year, stemming from Mbappé's decision not to activate a contract extension option that would have kept him at PSG until 2025.

Mbappé, 25, departed PSG in May 2024 and subsequently signed with Real Madrid. He made an immediate impact with his new club, scoring on his debut for the Merengue on August 14. The resolution of the financial dispute now lies with the governing bodies to which Mbappé has appealed.

Tanzania to Establish Mineral Exploration Academy and Largest Mineral Analysis Laboratory

Tanzania is poised for a significant transformation in its mineral sector with the establishment of a new mineral exploration academy and the country's largest mineral analysis laboratory at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).

On August 20, 2024, UDSM entered into a partnership with South Korea's YULHO Public Company through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Sh27 billion project. This initiative aims to enhance Tanzania's capacity to audit, analyze, and fully capitalize on its mineral wealth.

The new state-of-the-art laboratory will enable Tanzania to conduct comprehensive testing of its minerals within the country, thereby reducing the dependence on expensive foreign laboratories. This development is expected to significantly cut costs and improve efficiency in the mineral sector.

Furthermore, YULHO will provide scholarships to UDSM staff and students, strengthening the university's ability to produce skilled professionals for the industry. This partnership is seen as a crucial step in advancing Tanzania's mineral sector and boosting the nation's economic growth through better management and utilization of its natural resources.

Tanzanian Student Wins Bronze in 2024 Pan African Mathematics Olympiad

Stella Ludman Maliti, a student from Marian Girls Secondary School, has made Tanzania proud by winning a bronze medal in the 2024 Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO). The event, which took place at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, brought together top-performing students from across the continent.

Stella’s achievement not only highlights Tanzania's presence on the global academic stage but also serves as an inspiration for other girls to pursue studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields without fear. Her success is seen as a significant step forward in encouraging young women to excel in subjects traditionally dominated by men.

The competition was organized by the Tanzania Mathematical Association (CHAHITA) and showcased the talents of young mathematicians from various African countries. Stella's accomplishment is a testament to the growing emphasis on STEM education in Tanzania and the potential of young women to lead in these critical fields.

OpenAI and Condé Nast Partner to Showcase Content from Vogue, The New Yorker, and More

OpenAI and global media giant Condé Nast have entered into a multi-year partnership, allowing OpenAI's ChatGPT and its newly launched search engine, SearchGPT, to display content from renowned publications such as Vogue, The New Yorker, and GQ. This collaboration is the latest in a series of agreements OpenAI has struck with major media organizations.

As AI technology continues to reshape the landscape of news discovery and delivery, content produced by media firms has become increasingly valuable for training AI models. However, this trend has faced resistance from some media outlets, including The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune, which have pursued legal action to protect their content from unauthorized use by AI companies.

Neither OpenAI nor Condé Nast disclosed the financial details of the agreement. Brad Lightcap, OpenAI's chief operating officer, emphasized the importance of maintaining accuracy, integrity, and respect for quality reporting as AI's role in the news industry grows. "We’re committed to working with Condé Nast and other news publishers to ensure that as AI plays a larger role in news discovery and delivery, it maintains accuracy, integrity, and respect for quality reporting," said Lightcap.

Condé Nast's chief executive officer, Roger Lynch, expressed optimism about the partnership, noting that it offers a new revenue stream for the company. "Our partnership with OpenAI begins to make up for some of that revenue, allowing us to continue to protect and invest in our journalism and creative endeavors," Lynch said.

OpenAI launched SearchGPT, its AI-powered search engine, just last month. The company is actively gathering feedback from partners in the news industry to refine the platform. Other prominent media firms, including Time Magazine, the Financial Times, and the Associated Press, have also partnered with OpenAI.

The integration of AI chatbot technology into search engines is seen by many analysts as a crucial development for the future of internet search. While Google remains the dominant player in the market, with over 90% of the global share, it is also racing to incorporate AI-powered tools into its products.

The shift toward AI-driven search responses—offering conversational paragraphs instead of traditional link-based results—has raised concerns among news media firms, many of which depend on search traffic for their audiences and revenue. Last year, the BBC took steps to protect its content from being used without permission by AI companies, while also exploring the potential benefits of generative AI for its audience and society.
