Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of messaging service Telegram, was detained at Paris-Le Bourget Airport on an arrest warrant linked to allegations of money laundering, drug trafficking, and other offenses facilitated through his platform, according to French media reports.
Durov, a dual citizen of France and Russia, was taken into custody after landing in France from Azerbaijan. French prosecutors have not commented on the arrest, which is part of an ongoing investigation led by the National Anti-Fraud Office.
The arrest warrant was reportedly issued by France at the request of a special unit investigating crimes against minors, including online sexual exploitation.
Telegram, co-founded by Durov in response to Russian government crackdowns on digital freedom, has faced criticism from Western governments for its perceived lack of content moderation, making it susceptible to misuse for illegal activities.
In response to the arrest, Telegram stated that Durov "has nothing to hide" and that the platform adheres to EU laws, including the Digital Services Act. The company emphasized that it actively combats misuse and removes millions of pieces of harmful content daily.
Elon Musk and Russian officials have expressed support for Durov, highlighting concerns over freedom of speech and double standards.
Durov may appear before a judge to determine whether he will remain in custody as the investigation continues.
