Paetongtarn Shinawatra, 37, the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has been elected as the new Prime Minister of Thailand, making her the youngest person and the second woman to hold the position. She follows in the footsteps of her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, who was Thailand’s first female Prime Minister before being ousted from office in 2014.
Paetongtarn's election marks the third time a member of the Shinawatra family has taken on the role of Prime Minister. Her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, served as Prime Minister before being overthrown in a coup in 2006. Yingluck, her aunt, also served as Prime Minister until her government was removed in 2014, leading to her living in exile.
With Paetongtarn now at the helm, the Shinawatra family's political legacy continues in Thailand, a country that has seen significant political shifts over the years. Her leadership is expected to bring a new era of governance, with the nation and the world closely watching how she navigates the challenges ahead.
