Muhammad Yunus, the 84-year-old Nobel laureate, has assumed leadership of Bangladesh’s interim government following the sudden resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Despite acknowledging that this is not his revolution or dream, Yunus accepted the role after a request from student leaders, who have been at the forefront of protests that toppled the previous government.
In a private briefing, Yunus expressed his commitment to helping the youth achieve their vision for the country. He emphasized that his involvement is driven by a desire to support the younger generation in realizing their aspirations.
Sworn in on Thursday, Yunus faces the immediate challenge of restoring order in a country that has been gripped by violence, leaving over 400 people dead. The security situation is dire, with the police force largely absent due to a strike, and many police stations have been destroyed. Students have taken over traffic management in the absence of law enforcement.
Yunus now faces the daunting task of stabilizing the nation and addressing the deep-rooted issues that led to the government's collapse.
