Tanzania Sets the Stage to Lead in Regional Energy Trade with Strategic EAPP Integration

Tanzania is making strategic moves to capitalize on the East African Power Pool (EAPP), a unified electricity trading market for member states in East Africa. The nation is working diligently to integrate its power transmission infrastructure with that of other EAPP member countries.

This was revealed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, during the 19th meeting of EAPP member states, which brought together Energy Ministers and Permanent Secretaries in Uganda.

The meeting addressed various issues, including approving changes to the leadership structure of EAPP, ratifying operational rules and regulations, and endorsing the establishment of an independent market unit to manage the joint electricity market for member states.

Dr. Biteko emphasized that enabling infrastructure is already being put in place through the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) to prepare for integration into the common market. Key projects include the completion of the major transmission line connecting Tanzania and Kenya via Namanga and the ongoing construction of the Tanzania-Zambia (TAZA) connection, expected to be completed by 2026.

These initiatives are part of Tanzania's broader effort to ensure it is well-prepared to take full advantage of the opportunities presented by the EAPP, thereby enhancing regional energy trade and boosting the country's economic growth.
