Tanzania is set to be one of five African countries benefiting from the construction of a world-class medical facility, the African Medical Center of Excellence (AMCE). This project is being implemented by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in collaboration with King’s College Hospital in London, UK.
This was revealed by Mr. Brian Deaver, CEO of the Center of Medical Excellence in Abuja, during a visit by the Tanzanian delegation led by the Minister for Finance, Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba, to the similar project site on the outskirts of Abuja, Nigeria.
Mr. Deaver explained that the hospital, which will have a capacity of 500 beds, will utilize cutting-edge technology unprecedented in Africa to treat blood cancers and sickle cell disease.
He elaborated that the hospital, along with others to be constructed in Ghana, Kenya, and Tanzania, will provide comprehensive services, including diagnostics, treatment, nuclear medicine therapy, surgery, post-operative care, and specialized services in oncology, haematology, and cardiology.
“As we implement this project, our aim is to deliver high-quality healthcare, train health professionals, conduct research, create jobs, reduce foreign currency expenditure, and boost medical tourism in African countries,” Mr. Deaver added.
Following the visit to the project, which is expected to cost over $260 million, Finance Minister Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Natu El-maamry Mwamba, stated that this exemplary project will not only enhance medical services for citizens but also serve as a hub for medical tourism, attracting people from outside Tanzania to seek these advanced medical services.
Tanzania’s Acting Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Judica Nagunwa, highlighted that the efforts of President Samia Suluhu Hassan in the economic and healthcare sectors aim to improve the health of Tanzanians. She assured that the embassy would leverage every opportunity to ensure the successful implementation of the project for the benefit of Tanzanians.
Afreximbank is a Pan-African multilateral financial institution with the mandate to finance and promote trade across African countries.
Dr. Nchemba led the Tanzanian delegation, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Principal Government Paymaster, Dr. Natu El-maamry Mwamba, and the Deputy Permanent Secretary, President’s Office - Finance and Planning - Zanzibar, Mr. Aboud Hassan Mwinyi, to the African Caucus Meetings attended by Ministers of Finance and Central Bank Governors from member countries of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF).
