TileGreen, a Cairo-based start-up, is turning Egypt's plastic waste into sustainable construction materials, offering a greener alternative to traditional building practices.
Founded three years ago, TileGreen converts low-value plastic waste into a polymer aggregate composite that can replace concrete in various products. This innovation helps tackle Egypt's significant plastic waste problem and reduces carbon emissions from the construction industry, which is responsible for 23% of the nation’s CO2 emissions.
Each tile produced by TileGreen removes around 125 plastic bags from the environment. The start-up has already supplied interlocking tiles to real estate developer SODIC and is exploring further projects.
TileGreen’s technology can be used to create over 40 products, including bricks and urban furniture. Experts like Mohamed El Zayet emphasize the need for incentives and awareness to support such sustainable innovations in Egypt’s market.
TileGreen is leading the way in Egypt’s green transformation, offering innovative solutions to reduce waste and lower the environmental impact of the construction industry.
