The Minister of State in the President’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI), Hon. Mohammed Mchengerwa, has announced that Tanzania’s Local Government elections will take place on November 27, 2024.
Minister Mchengerwa emphasized the importance of local government as outlined in the 1977 Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, specifically Articles 145 and 146, which mandate the existence of local governments and their purpose. The elections are aimed at ensuring that local governments are democratically led, in accordance with the Local Government Authorities Acts for District and Urban areas, Chapters 287 and 288 respectively.
In preparation for the elections, election supervisors will announce the names and boundaries of wards and neighborhoods 72 days prior to the election date. This will allow citizens to register and vote for positions such as village and neighborhood chairpersons, as well as members of the village government and street committees.
Prospective candidates are required to collect nomination forms at least 26 days before the election and return them within seven days of the date announced by the election supervisor. Campaigns will officially begin seven days prior to the election, and each political party must submit its campaign schedule to the election supervisor no less than seven days before the campaign period starts.
This announcement marks a critical step in ensuring the democratic governance of Tanzania's local authorities.
