Tanzania Becomes Second Largest Tobacco Producer in Africa

Tanzania has emerged as the second largest producer of tobacco in Africa, according to the Minister for Agriculture, Hussein Bashe. He made this announcement on August 6, 2024, during a ceremony where President Samia Suluhu Hassan laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new cigarette factory and the expansion of the Tobacco Processing Factory (MTPL) in Morogoro.

“Tanzania was once categorized as ‘others’ in the global tobacco sector, but today we are the second largest producer in Africa, following Zimbabwe. This season alone, we have generated over 400 million dollars. El-Nino rains have set us back, otherwise we would be the largest producer in Africa,” said Minister Bashe.
