Tanzania has announced its plans and readiness to develop nuclear energy as an alternative clean power source to drive economic development and improve social welfare.
This commitment was outlined by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, during the Second US-Africa Nuclear Energy Summit currently taking place in Nairobi, Kenya. The summit gathers leaders from the energy sector, policymakers, and experts from various African countries.
Dr. Biteko emphasized that Tanzania is prepared to advance nuclear energy as a reliable and sufficient power source that meets international environmental standards. He highlighted that the country's readiness is supported by key policy documents, including the 2015 Energy Policy, the 2009 Mineral Policy, the Power Sector Master Plan, and the Renewable Energy Strategy. These documents recognize the importance of nuclear energy in meeting Tanzania's energy needs.
"Under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the government is taking crucial steps to enable the use of nuclear energy as a clean power source," said Dr. Biteko. He also noted that Tanzania possesses approximately 58,500 tons of uranium deposits, which could be utilized for nuclear energy production.
